Viewpoint: Strictly business: Godfathers in Asia

In each place I flipped through the local version of the Tatler a British society guide in my hotel room as I often do. Call it a guilty pleasure. For high-society folks and wannabes in Asia few honors seem to outrank being pictured among the magazine's pages. Not surprisingly most of the photos feature tycoons and business magnates and their well-coifed families. ne wonders how many locals leafing through such glossies realize the extent to which these billionaires can control the fates of their economies – and not for the better… “After the financial crisis in Southeast Asia in state after state taxpayers picked up the tab tycoons picked up the pieces and life went on as before” Studwell wrote. “The lesson of the past decade has been that the relationship between political and economic elites in Southeast Asia is more enduring than almost anyone imagined. ” The dominance of obscenely wealthy businessmen in Hong Kong Indonesia Malaysia the Philippines Singapore and Thailand helps explain why Asia isn't enjoying more entrepreneurship the benefits of growth aren't trickling down enough and long-term equity returns often aren't what they could be. As the business barons hold down local rivals they undermine growth. The super-rich remain on the ascendancy for two reasons. ne deregulation efforts have never really taken hold. Two tycoons have tended to avoid export manufacturing industries because they abhor global competitiveness.

Review: Radisson SAS Dubai Media City

Slightly confusingly the towers are named ‘East’ and ‘West’ though they are actually situated North North East and South South West according to Google Earth. ne of the Radisson DMC’s major strengths is the free WiFi it offers throughout the hotel. It’s this that makes it an ‘office away from the office’ for so many business people with some spending hours each day on their laptops in the bar. In fact that’s actually where I wrote this (and how I checked aerials of the hotel of Google Earth)… Leisure and pleasureIn terms of health and leisure the Radisson has two outdoor pools one in each tower a gym in East tower and a spa in West tower. The spa is quite innovative with five treatment rooms themed as different nations such as Thailand China and Japan. Being located in the middle of Media City the Radisson does not enjoy a particularly scenic setting. But the views from its rooftop bars are spectacular especially at sunset. It is only a 10 minute taxi ride to the beach and around 15 minutes to the huge Mall of the Emirates. There are also several shops including a pharmacy and bank nearby in Dubai Media City.

Green Globe to establish benchmarking for spa operations using Six…
AME – AME – Aug 15, 2007
Up until the introduction of this programme spas have traditionally been benchmarked through the resorts and hotels in which they operate rather than independently. As Six Senses Spas have been a driving force in environmentally friendly spa development and operations it was a natural progression that Green Globe and Six senses should join resources to develop benchmarking for spa operations. Comprehensive data from Six Senses Spas has been collected and compiled for analysis of spa performance in order to set baseline and best-practice standards as endorsed by EarthCheck. The many benchmarking indicators which include all aspects of water usage and energy efficiency will become the integral part of the Green Globe Sector Benchmarking Indicators for spa operations. With total commitment to this sponsored programme every Six Senses Spa has enrolled for Green Globe Affiliation with Benchmarked status scheduled before the end of 2007 and full Certification by 2008.
