At the Authors’ Lounge you can find their books and read them over afternoon tea surrounded by white walls handcrafted furniture tropical plants and photos of old Bangkok. Louis Thomas Leonowens son of Anna Leonowens (Anna and the King of Siam) was once the famous hotel’s proprietor. And Thai silk tycoon Jim Thompson was a one-time owner of the hotel along with a group of business partners. As soon as you walk through the door you know you’re somewhere special as you’re greeted with a traditional Thai garland of sweet smelling flowers. For almost 130 years royalty dignitaries and distinguished travellers have followed the Chao Phrya River through the heart of Bangkok to the doors of The riental. These days you can hire a boat and sightsee along the canals observing everyday life. Sights include people fishing in what looks like very murky water clothes being washed and hung out babies lying in the sun small temples verandahs full of pot plants kitchens filled with pots and pans food being delivered by floating marketeers including delicious smelling chicken sates and extremely over-priced souvenirs being delivered to tourists on hired boats.

Chad Pike senior managing director of Blackstone which also has invested in Accor and Hyatt hotels recently told a conference that his group was “ready to come to Asia” and planning to open an office in Hong Kong. But not all of the hotels being sold in Asia have the new model in mind. When Kingdom Hotel Investments bought the Crowne Plaza Karon Beach in Phuket Thailand for about $103 million last May it shifted the hotel to Kingdom's Mövenpick brand. The ownership trend does not influence new construction because that is based on investment decisions and market fundamentals said Craig Collins managing director of Investment Sales for Asia at Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels. “Funds typically however given their shorter investment horizon and holding period prefer to buy trading assets rather than build new ones” he said. But for investment funds the attractions of retaining an operator especially a well-known brand are obvious. “We're not in the brand-building business and I don't see us ever competing with these brands” Sean Williams managing director at Morgan Stanley Japan Securities recently told a conference audience.

Dr Phassaporn’s father Chote Wattanachet welcomed the verdict. Her younger brother Thanapong said from Chiang Mai that justice had been served. Dr Wisut formerly a well-known gynecologist at Chulalongkorn Hospital and Dr Phassaporn also a gynecologist working at the State Railway of Thailand Hospital were married in 1981 and had two children. According to the verdict their marriage became rocky towards the end of 1998 when Dr Phassaporn discovered her husband had been having an affair. n July 1 1999 Dr Wisut moved out of the home they shared in the Makkasan area. After the separation their conflict continued. Dr Wisut made an appointment to meet his estranged wife at a restaurant at the Siam Discovery shopping center in Pathumwan on February 20 2001… She has not been seen since. That same day Dr Wisut checked in at Witthayaniwet Residence Hall at Chulalongkorn University where he is believed to have killed his wife and dismembered her body. The following day he left the university accommodation and checked in at the Sofitel Central Plaza Hotel. He had booked the room over a week before on February 13 the court verdict said. The court believes Dr Wisut disposed of his wife’s remains by cutting up the flesh and flushing the pieces down the toilet at the university accommodation and later at the hotel. Pieces of flesh were found in the septic tanks at both sites and DNA tests confirmed they belonged to Dr Phassaporn. Just before the restaurant appointment Dr Wisut had bought packages of small and large black plastic bags 30 sedative pills and a large amount of toilet paper and odor-controlling tablets.
