It has enough experience to lead the ministry and the private sector in the right direction. Surapit Promsit director of Hospitality Management of Suan Dusit Rajabhat University said the industry should adjust its strategies to balance Asian and Western markets. "Thailand has been developing tourism products that only focus on facilitating tourists from the key Western markets. We need to be more aware of the needs of Asian tourists" he said. The impact of globalisation has been a key factor in driving the booming Chinese outbound market and the industry needs to be aware of the weight carried by the Asian market as well. He pointed to the Chinese market where travellers have cash to spend but need to feel as welcome as Westerners. "It will be a challenge for hotel owners and tour operators who may need to think about how to balance markets and develop products to fit the various markets" he said… The impact of globalisation has been a key factor in driving the booming Chinese outbound market and the industry needs to be aware of the weight carried by the Asian market as well. "It will be a challenge for hotel owners and tour operators who may need to think about how to balance markets and develop products to fit the various markets" he said. "For example how will they maintain a swimming pool to suit both their Western and Chinese guests?" Some hotels may have marble decorations that look like a "five-star" hotel to the Chinese but not to Westerners. According to Surapit there are some five-star international hotel chains in Phuket that have been trying to strike a balance by adding "Chinese riental Style Buildings" that can be offered to Chinese guests who feel more comfortable with Asian-style accommodation. He cited examples for developing facilities for the Asian market: third-language information signs Chinese or Japanese magazines and multiple language channels in rooms. Suchat Sritama The Nation.
