Preparations to pull out in case the cry for freedom turns violent
Nation Multimedia – Sep 26, 2007
Customs Department director-general Chavalit Sethameteekul said the widespread protests in Burma had yet to affect Thailand's border trade. The border trade is a crucial strategy on Thailand's part because many trading partners benefit from the Kingdom's facilities and transportation he said. Several groups of Thai and European tourists have cancelled trips into Burma. Airlines and hotels are preparing emergency measures in case violence breaks out. Association of Thai Travel Agents president Apichart Sankary said international tourists particularly those from Europe have cancelled excursion trips to Burma that were included in their Thailand holiday packages. Some Thai tourists have also postponed trips into Burma for security reasons he said adding that only German tourists had confirmed they would go ahead and visit Burma despite the unrest. A local tour operator said the number of tourists going to Burma would decline because tourists would wait and see how the situation developed.

D2 is a new-generation hotel from the owners of the DusitThani in Bangkok. You can hear the quality of the sound systemwhile you sit at the Moxie bar and work your way through cocktailsthat include an exotic lemongrass and ginger martini and the tomyum martini which tastes too much like the soup to be good. You're just across from the Night Bazaar which may be thebest place for Thai food in Chiang Mai though I'd hesitate to eatthere again so strong are my memories of food poisoning from aclam dish there in 1985. Frankly the food at Dalaabaa is nothingspecial and the cocktails are shockingly short on alcohol. Charming Company The waitresses stood sweetly in a row and watched us eatpaying enough attention to make us uncomfortable yet not enoughto do anything about glasses that needed refilling or that big antthat wandered across our table… Unfortunately you just look out onto a busy road and weget so much concrete chic in London — especially the Barbicanwhere I live — that I wouldn't travel to Chiang Mai for more. The food drink and service at Maze are good and the pricesof course low by European standards. There's even decent Thaiwine and some passable Western food such as mini-pizzas alongwith Thai and Chinese favorites such as tom yum gong and springrolls. ur fellow diners were young Thais who looked more affluentthan us. They trooped out to a sports-utility vehicle and aMercedes while we flagged down a tuk-tuk. Romance Champagne ther options include the House where Western and fusionfood is served in what you might describe as a colonial-styleresidence. With its high ceilings and candlelight it's a romanticspot like somewhere out of the movie “Indochine.
