ABC Regional nline – ABC Regional nline – Sep 17, 2007
About 90 people died when a jet operated by the budget carrier ne-Two-Go crashed on the resort island of Phuket. fficials say most of the passengers were foreigners and one Australian is among the dead. The aircraft smashed into an embankment broke in two and burst into flames while trying to land last night. Early speculation is focusing on the extremely bad weather conditions with heavy rain reducing visibility and suggestions that a sudden downdraft may have slammed the plane on to the runway… JHN GERARD ‘DNNELL: The plane when it was landing it just felt you could tell something was wrong and next thing bang! That’s all I can remember. REPRTER: So how was the weather like before the plane land?JHN GERARD ‘DNNELL: It was very bad rain. BARNEY PRTER: Simon Luttrell owns a hotel near the airport. He agrees the weather conditions were unusually bad at the time. SIMN LUTTRELL: It had been raining monsoon rain throughout the day which is fairly typical for the weather at this time of year. However at the approximate time of the crash certainly where we were sitting in our hotel 600 metres away there was suddenly a very bad squall of wind and rain very very hard driving rain and wing that lasted about 15 minutes. And as far as I know that’s the time that the plane was attempting to land.
