Chef Christine Manfield whose restaurant Universal opened in Sydney’s Darlinghurst in August says there are few formal restaurants in Cambodia or Laos; rather culinary traditions belong in the home and are handed down from generation to generation. She says travellers should eat in the markets or in people’s homes where they can experience the best local cooking.

He refined his craft at London institutions such as the Savoy and Connaught hotels and has consulted for Singapore Airlines and the Hyatt Hotel group. He travels to Asia regularly usually Thailand and tries to visit Switzerland in January each year to see family and ski at Zermatt.

"The fun continues with a Headdress Ball a Celebrity Look-Alike Contest a Pimp and Ho Party. During the week nearly-nude bodies covered in paint walk the streets alongside giant penises made of foam rubber or hot pink fake fur. Farther afield the people of Thailand are known for their exuberant celebrations of foreign holidays and Bangkok puts a very gay spin on Halloween. In the Silom Soi 4 district (silomsoi4. net) locals throw a street party and costume competition that has men in heavy makeup posing on a runway. The gay Balcony Pub and Telephone Pub are usually involved. Stuart Duff Balcony co-owner had fun last year… A street appears to my right and I take it gratefully not caring where it goes. The crowd thins and I breathe deeply and follow a side street to the N Bus heading for the ferry terminal. I get off at the last stop and run all the way to my hotel. When I arrive shaking in my room I’m amazed to discover that my witch hat is still perched jauntily on my head. Burma dismisses UN statement

Soe Win had little if any influence in policy-making as prime minister and was largely considered a figurehead for the junta. In addition to its statement the UN also renewed its diplomatic efforts to push Burma toward reform by announcing it will dispatch special envoy Ibrahim Gambari to the region this weekend. Gambari is to begin his consultations in Thailand on Monday and then travel to Malaysia Indonesia India China and Japan “with a view to returning to Myanmar shortly thereafter” UN deputy spokeswoman Marie kabe said. She gave no date for his trip to Rangoon. Gambari met with the junta’s leaders earlier this month during a four-day trip to Burma after troops opened fire on peaceful protests in Rangoon. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said after Gambari’s visit that he could not call the trip “a success”. Burma’s military junta has said 10 people were killed and nearly 2100 arrested in last month’s demonstrations with 700 later released… The Thailand-based Assistance Association for Political Prisoners comprised of around 100 former inmates has put out a report describing homosexual rape electric shocks to the genitals near drowning burning with hot wax and other abuse. Also Thai police said a bomb exploded in a guest house just across the border inside Burma injuring two people. Colonel Photsawat Tangchui a police chief in the border district of Mae Sot in Tak province said the blast hit the Shwebyisaya hotel about 30 metres from the border.
