The Age – Oct 25, 2007
And forthe more adventurous there are many markets and alternative outletswhere serious shoppers can haggle to their heart’s content. The secret when you set out on your expedition Wendy says isto stay cool and develop a flexible attitude to what’s going onaround you – Bangkok (with its seven million population) can bedisorderly sometimes dirty and very congested. Select a hotel that is close to a station on the cheap andconvenient Skytrain elevated railway opened in 1999 to relieve thecity’s notorious traffic tangles or the newer MTR underground railsystem. This will enable you to leapfrog over major congestionspots. All a serious shopper needs apart from the fine details in HotSpots to Shop is a city map and a suitable supply of cash orcredit cards. f its 208 pages 140 are devoted to lists of retail outletsseparated into categories from antiques and artifacts to furnitureclothing and to tailors and dressmakers plus cooking schools. For each store you’re given such useful detail as the addressand closest public transport telephone and fax numbers openinghours email website which credit cards are acceptable and abrief review of the wares on offer… That could happen in any city Wendy says. She counsels: stayrelaxed smile a lot and never ever lose your temper and startshouting which is considered very bad manners in Thailand. Thai people are really very friendly and helpful she adds. Wendy also warns that consumer protection laws are not the samein Thailand as in many western countries and to make sure aboutwhat you are buying and make sure warranties are valid in yourhome country. She sums up: I hope the information in this book helps you toenjoy the colour and excitement of Bangkok as much as I do and tohave a fun-filled and fruitful shopping holiday.
