It was just after 6. 30am and the temperature was already nudging 30C. After retrieving our luggage we were met by our driver who was taking us to our hotel for the first leg of our holiday in Thailand. Known as the Land of Smiles it’s fair to say that in recent years Thailand hasn’t had very much to be happy about. n Boxing Day 2004 an undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra caused a tsunami which swept across Asia killing 275000 people including 8500 in Thailand. Towns and communities were wiped off the map while the steady flow of tourists – the lifeblood of the country’s economy – dwindled to a trickle. Then last September the country was thrown into turmoil and confusion once again when the military leadership overthrew Thailand’s elected Prime Minister in a coup.

" During the Bangkok Marriott's Chocolate Promotion from tomorrow to December 5 guests will be able to make their way (without machetes) through a jungle-y chocolate tour – from tree to berry to all sorts of processing. The tour is open to schools pastry chefs interested in learning about chocolate the public – and anyone else who wants to see the progress of chocolate from jungle to mouth-watering dainties. The trees resting peacefully in the hotel's garden until tomorrow have been brought up from southern Thailand for the occasion. Now they're under the care of chief gardener Damrong Keetiprom who for more than four years has been taking care of the hotel's lovely landscaping. The promotion is being held in Numero Uno. Now under a "refreshment project" of its own the coffee and pastry shop is temporarily spread out in the lobby where all the chocolate treats will be on offer for those wishing to take them home or simply enjoy them at the hotel. And such treats they are too! Executive pastry chef Bernd piela has been working non-stop on chocolate creations that you won't seen anywhere else – lollipops macaroons pralines truffles and bars; cakes and cheesecakes; fondues pancakes and waffles… Now they're under the care of chief gardener Damrong Keetiprom who for more than four years has been taking care of the hotel's lovely landscaping. The festival was competing against the likes of Tourism Malaysia (which won three awards by the way) the Singapore Tourist Board Macau Government Tourist ffice Tourism Authority of Thailand Korea Tourism Tourism New South Wales and others with vast budgets for advertising. “So this is a feather in MIGF’s cap” Day points out. Naphiel and General Secretary of Sri Lanka Pakistan Friendship Association Ashraf Roomi. ****Sri Lankans to participate in international folklore festivalSri Lanka has been invited to participate at the 19th International Folklore Festival to be held in Thailand in celebration of the 80th birth anniversary of the King of Thailand. The Folklore Festival will be held from November 20 to 27 in the Northern City of Lampang(close to Chiang Mai) at which 15 countries with over 500 participants together with nearly 1000 local artistes will participate. This international event is organised by CIFF the arm of UN promoting folklore. Sri Lanka will be represented by a team led by Tilak Fernando and 24 selected members of the Hillwood College Dance Troupe from Kandy. The team will also participate in the annual ‘ Loy Krathong’ festival held to coincide with the full moon day in the month of November where lighted decorative floats made from banana leaves are floated on waterways… Chinniah presented his Credentials to President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynki on ctober 30. ****Japanese business delegation in Lanka. of Japan Lester De Alwis.
