Yuzi is a paradise in China
Stuff.co.nz – Nov 27, 2007
As a premier five-star hotel and a member of the prestigious Relais and Chateaux group Yuzi Paradise presents a destination like no other on the planet. Locally Yuzi means fool so this place could simply be called a Fool's Paradise except that it is also houses one of the world's largest modern sculpture gardens and workshops. Yuzi Paradise's creators took its name so far as to open on April Fools Day in 2003 seven years after construction first began. Since then it has hosted 10 International Sculpture Symposia and sponsored a couple of hundred of the world's top sculptors from 47 countries who have created over 200 works that make this place an international focal point for modern sculpture. It is also a place where guests and tourists can come to immerse themselves in the fantasies of nature art and luxury… In the case of Yuzi this takes the form of spectacular desert gardens featuring hundreds of species of cacti many from Australia and other desert climates. Yuzi's desert garden is rightfully proud of their crowning glory a Queensland bottle tree that has taken to its prominent position as a shade tree at the peak of the garden. Next door is the Renaissance Greenhouse a high tech environment that is filled with semi tropical species from around the world including Chinese peppermint American vanilla and luo le from Thailand. This is also where Yuzi gathers the herbs and essential oils used in its luxury spa treatments. The striving for artistic perfection carries over into the luxurious boutique accommodation buildings of HMA I and HMA II. Bar codes representing the Buddhist Heart of Prajna Paramita sutra decorate the exterior walls of HMA I as an outward reminder of the inner peace that is sought in the spa sauna and foot spa found inside. In here pampering the mind is as important as spoiling the body.

They have each been asked to decorate a tree. This year one of the artists is Elizabeth Romhild a Danish-Armenian artist that has lived in Bangkok for many years. Her Christmas tree decoration is based on elements from both East and West: “I wanted to capture the spirit of the delicate and elegant Thai forms and add to them a Scandinavian touch” Elizabeth Romhild says. The trees will be on display around Parichart Court inside the Four Seasons on view for all guests and shoppers from November 15 December 15 2007.

Life beyond the dollar
Livemint – Nov 27, 2007
nce again it was the same basic problem: high US deficits. fficials from five countries?the US Japan Germany France and the UK?met at the Plaza Hotel in the September of that year. There was wide agreement that the dollar was overvalued and had to fall against the major currencies. The Plaza deal was a comprehensive plan for price-fixing. The dollar would be eased down against the other major currencies and especially the Japanese yen. That is precisely what happened but with unintended consequences… Another unintended consequence of the rising yen: Japanese manufacturers had to tweak their strategies. A lot of work could be done offshore in cheaper countries in Asia. So to cut costs Japanese investments flowed into places such as Malaysia Thailand and the Philippines. This movement of money fed the bubble in these countries. It popped in 1997 to devastating effect. What will replace the dollar – a new and truly global currency or a multitude of competing currencies? There is a point to this little excursion into financial history. Connolly was right in 1971: the dollar may be the US currency but it is our problem.
