Rubbing shoulders with the locals
The Age – Jan 13, 2008
At about $115 for 90 minutes it was a bargain in Australianterms. In Sydney you could easily expect to pay double for the samestandard in such opulent surrounds. For my money though you can’t beat the expert hands (and feetand elbows) at Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital. At about $8 forthe best massage I’ve ever had it’s a bargain in anyone’slanguage. The writer was a guest of the Tourism Authority ofThailand. TRIP NTES* Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital: two kilometres fromPrachin Buri about a two-hour drive east of Bangkok. ne-hour Thaimassage THB 230 (about $8)… My three friends and I are the only Westerners insight and the rather large white hairy legs of the male in ourgroup is causing much giggling and mirth among the staff. Built in 1909 as a reception area for King Rama V thetwo-storey hospital is on the outside a baroque colonialconfection of yellow and lime green with lots of decorative whiteplaster work and surrounded by luxurious gardens includingsomewhat inexplicably a rather grand avenue of sculpted concreteroosters. But inside it’s all business and you can forget five-starhotel-like facilities fancy body wraps and delicate perfumedmassages. The doctors and therapists are here to make you feelbetter not pampered and the hour-long massage is nothing if notrobust. Sometimes it feels good sometimes I have to do all I can not toyelp out in pain but by the time it’s over my body feels likeit’s been recast and repoured into my skin and all mytravel-induced aches and pains have disappeared although I can’thelp but wonder if I will be a mess of bruises in the morning. We’d spent the previous night at the nearby Rainbow ArokayaHolistic Health Paradise a beautifully appointed riverside healthfarm that caters almost exclusively to cashed-up Thais wanting afew days of detox and luxury. Yet again we were the only Westerners in sight as we tossed upwhether we should try the Volcanic Mineral Stone Sand Spa whichinvolved being buried up to the neck in hot sand and promisedstate-of-the-art nanotechnology infrared detoxification or theDome Sauna and Medical Hydrology Mineral Bath.

A jewel in the Himalayan crown
Deccan Herald – Jan 13, 2008
All the knee length stockings that men were wearing looked fresh no ladders and seemed to grip! Somewhat of a surprise as most of my life knee length stockings which I had to wear in school always seemed to dribble down. So with curiosity I asked “How come everyone is wearing such good stockings. What are they made of? Where do they come from?” The answer was Thailand. And then it went on to say that most of our material including the textiles with which we make some of our clothes when they are not pure cotton comes from Thailand. And indeed that is what we found when we were in Manipur or Meghalaya that Thai fabrics and Thai readymades are more suited to those who lived in those areas and also because there was great ethnic similarity a cultural homogeneity of a kind that is difficult to specify in academic terms. ne of our colleagues from outside Bhutan referred to what he called the Bhutan trademark and brand Gross National Happiness GNH. The concept of GNH as a substitute for not only Gross Domestic Product or Gross National Income but also what can be called the Human Development Report — has been an intriguing Bhutanese experience… The Bhutanese government has decided to expand its tourism potential and invited the high-profile what they call star hotel companies to open hotels in Bhutan. Tatas have already been signed up. They are very proud of the fact that they are taking the high-end hotels and want to stay with what is called high-end tourism. For example they charge $ 200 per day to those who require visas which fortunately Indians don’t require. The building of these hotels and furnishing them would require enormous amount of imports of everything from steel girders to room linen to pipes and so forth. Therefore there would be an influx of contractors engineers service providers into this jewel in the Himalayan crown. It is difficult to imagine that the ‘harmony’ which in turn has been one of the basic foundations of gross national happiness could survive such an onslaught.

Holiday tales of glow woe

content-row clearfloat –> WITH the holidays drawing to a close some well-known Adelaide faces are filtering back to town with interesting tales to tell. They include radio head Kym Dillon who went overseas for the summer break with girlfriend Emma Pawlowski 21. The couple who have a 27-year age gap chilled out for a couple of weeks in Thailand shopping riding elephants and generally enjoying being anonymous – well almost. Even though he was thousands of kilometres away from home Kym was spotted!"I was shopping in one of the Patong Beach markets and I heard this voice say `Hey Kym when are you starting on Triple M?’" he said. "It was bizarre. "It was a lovely couple from Adelaide and we had a chat and I introduced them to Emma. "The getaway was well in order for Kym after the drama of his defection from MIX102… "I was walking along the side of the road and a motorbike took a sudden turn and was headed straight for me. "I just jumped and ended up on a mound of dirt which collapsed into a trench and my foot just snapped back. "In agony Jules managed to get into a cab and get back to his hotel to his wife Georgina and daughter Sofia. "Luckily it was at the end of the holiday because I pulled all the ligaments and tendons and took a chip out of the bone" he said. Not that Jules has let the injury slow him down too much. He’s been back on-air this week and even managed to fit in a session with his personal trainer Duncan Maxwell at the Energy Clinic in Unley. During their Bali break Jules and Georgina caught up with Greg Pickhaver aka HG Nelson and his wife Kate who they know through mutual friends.
