… news and business from Indonesia Philippines Thailand…
Asia Times nline – Feb 21, 2008
The Ministry of Commerce’s website lists the company as the second largest in export earnings of the top 20 import-export companies in Myanmar in 2006-2007. Htoo Trading was one of two main companies granted contracts for the construction of Naypyidaw the new capital city where in late 2005 the junta abruptly moved all government offices from the old capital of Yangon. Another controversial Htoo Trading construction project was the 60-meter-high tower and nearby 150-room hotel in Bagan the site of a famous temple complex and renowned international tourist attraction. The tower came under harsh international criticism by UNESC and others for damaging the aesthetics of the site. The company’s timber business has also been criticized for causing the large-scale destruction of Myanmar’s forests. A 2002 report by environmental watchdog Global Witness stated that the Htoo Trading Company’s logging operations were largely responsible for much of the environmental degradation in the country. The company has also been known to provide heavy machinery to smaller logging operations which in turn sell their logs to Htoo Trading for exports… He recently reportedly traveled to Pusan South Korea to purchase the ships. Things are even looking up again for Air Bagan which began a new route to South Korea in December and has since announced that it will resume its cancelled Singapore route in September. Ministry plans workshops for exporters
Nation Multimedia – Feb 21, 2008
The move came after Com-merce Minister Mingkwan Sangsuwan ordered the Trade Negotiations Department to review existing free-trade pacts to see whether the country was maximising benefits from them. For instance Thai exporters have applied for only 10 per cent of potential tariff privileges under the Thailand-China FTA since its early-harvest scheme for mainly agricultural products was implemented in January 2005. The wide-ranging Japan-Thailand Economic Partner-ship (Jtepa) only went into effect last November so it is still quite new. Chutima Bunyapraphasara director-general of the department said yesterday that the department had found that some FTAs have lower recognition among exporters particularly the Thailand-China FTA and the Jtepa. The agency plans to orga-nise workshops for exporters to gain a better understand-ing of the FTAs' export benefits. They are scheduled to start early next month for the Japan Asean-China and Thailand-India agreements… Thailand will also enjoy bigger import quotas for some products like molasses tapioca starch bananas pork and pineapple. The Jtepa will also facilitate Thai services and employees in businesses such as advertising and travel agencies and in vocations including tour guides hotel operators tailors and designers as well as legal architectural and engineering consulting. The department will also encourage exporters and investors to tap other FTAs including those that went into effect with Australia in January 2005 New Zealand in July 2005 and India for an early-harvest programme of 82 products in September 2004. The Asean-China pact is another one involving Thailand. It went into effect in July 2005. Petchanet Pratruangkrai The Nation Privacy Policy © 2006 Nation Multimedia Group.

Killer steeped in world of vice
BBC News – Feb 21, 2008
While we may never know what motivated Wright to carry out the murders it became clear during his trial at Ipswich Crown Court that he was no stranger to prostitution. He regularly used sex workers in the red light district of Ipswich bringing them to his home or having sex with them in his car. TV appearanceHis appetite for prostitutes took him from Thailand to the streets of Norwich and eventually Ipswich. In the 1980s Wright was working as a steward on the QE2 cruise liner when he was captured on film in Pattaya Thailand in the BBC television documentary Whicker’s World. The television images show a young woman clasping her hands around Wright’s neck and pulling him close for a kiss… She said the wig did not bother her too much since many men who looked for prostitutes dressed as women to avoid arrest. She put her wariness down to instinct and said the girls called him a “weirdo”. In 2001 he worked as a barman at the Brook Hotel in Felixstowe before being sacked for stealing hundreds of pounds from the till for which he was ordered to carry out 100 hours community service. It was a DNA sample taken at the time of that conviction which led to police matching samples taken from the dead women. "You get two girls for the price of one" Steve Wright speaking of street prostitutes At the time of the killings Wright lived with his partner Pam who took his surname in London Road in Ipswich. Wright would drive Ms Wright in his dark blue Ford Mondeo to her nightshift work before going to pick up prostitutes in Ipswich. He told the court that he moved from using massage parlours to street prostitutes because they were cheaper: “You get two girls for the price of one.
