The Age – Mar 29, 2008
It is about a woman called Nicola who is dying of cancer andcomes to stay with the narrator who happens to be named Helenwhile she submits herself to the jiggery-pokery of a quack inMelbourne who convinces her she can survive. Helen the narrator of The Spare Room is a writer andlives in a northern suburb next door to her daughter andgrandchildren. She uses words such as cockamamie and twit sheplays the ukulele and once underwent a course of colonic irrigationat a health spa in Thailand. She sounds remarkably similar to HelenGarner the author of The Spare Room. So it seemed obvious. Could we meet I asked Garner at her homefor a chat about the new book. It would be very useful to see thesoon-to-be-famous spare room… The book is a novel. Garner has run her flagup the pole for fiction this time and she wants to stand herground. So we find ourselves seated on a sofa in a large hotel atthe point when teatime blurs into the cocktail hour. It’s hard to believe that Garner is 65 now. She is a writer manyof us have travelled with since the shock of her first novelMonkey Grip which was published 31 years ago. Then hernarrator was Nora and since when she has scrutinised refinedtranscended and transformed her own experience in her writing bothfiction and non-fiction. Garner has kept diaries all her life and said recently that shehad burnt all those up to about 1980.
