Most reply that they recognise this impediment but want to maintain a presence hoping for better days and wiser policies. They also remember the mid-1990s when people began appreciating wine which resulted in double and triple annual sales increases until the '97 economic debacle. At that time Thailand was the 12th-largest purchaser of Bordeaux wines in the world. Now it's barely an asterisk on sales charts. Although many top-quality wines continue to be enjoyed locally learned estimates are that only one bottle in 10 is capped with the badge of revenue rape known as a tax stamp. Despite government policies that nourish a growing black market and ignore the primary cause of alcohol abuse in Thailand – cheap domestically distilled whisky – premium winery stars keep coming. And we happily continue trading our traditional hospitality and great food for their encouragement and superb wines… The '00 and '96 from near perfect years were beautifully balanced with the '00 brimming with berry and floral fruit. Chateau Brane-Cantenac like all classified Bordeaux wines can be purchased from any distributor who chooses to order them through various negociant suppliers. Take note of three formidable French wine dinners coming up: Tomorrow one of Burgundy's best producers Laurent Ponsot will present his Cote de Nuits Grand Cru Clos De La Roche wines at Le Normandie riental Hotel. Reservations at (02) 659 9000. n March 11 Jean-Michele Cazes will pour wines from four of his estates including Grand Cru-class Chateau Lynch-Bages at a 7pm dinner at Landmark Hotel's RR&B restaurant. Reservations at (02) 254 0404. n March 13 also at Le Normandie there's a vertical tasting and gourmet dinner with Bruno Eynard manager-winemaker of the Grand Cru-class Chateau Lagrange Saint Julien Bordeaux.

It’s a tough rebrand: Thaksin’s old image (via Human Rights Watch) includes ‘leading a regime responsible for numerous extrajudicial executions disappearances torture and the deaths of hundreds of Malay Muslims’; ‘the deaths of 2275 in his war on drugs’; ‘attacks on media freedom’; plus outstanding corruption charges which Thaksin denies. Last year – during his City takeover – Thaksin hired PR firm Bell Pottinger to handle news management and ‘reputation issues’; this year there’s no need. ‘Thaksin’s very generous and a very nice person’ says Kasper Schmeichel sent to Thailand to promote Thaksin’s work with children. ‘He’s a very good man and we’re close to his heart… ‘He’s a very good man and we’re close to his heart. He’s a genuine guy. ‘ City’s media manager Paul Tyrell staying in Thaksin’s luxury hotel in Bangkok added: ‘If Thaksin continues to invest in City we’ll be hugely grateful. ‘Fifa: still got itSepp Blatter says Fifa will ‘drive corruption out of football and build a better future for the game. ‘ Last week’s highlight: being accused by Dominica’s FA of ‘illegal bullying’ after Fifa vice-president Jack Warner tried to reinstate his friend Patrick John as their president. John jailed after a failed armed coup attempt in the 80s was deposed as FA president in 2006 accused of ‘poor performance’. This week: Ethiopia’s FA protest after a similar Fifa attempt to reinstate their former president Asheber Woldegiorgise – also deposed for ‘poor performance’.

Before the store was even a thought Shelley was buying up as many pieces as she could carry and bringing them home for her own enjoyment. “That was one of the reasons among many that I opened the store” Shelley says. Whether they’re bed sheets and blankets or more artistic and fashionable pieces the real pleasure for her is buying the items directly from the person who makes them. For pieces she doesn’t buy on her travels she researches them and makes sure they are fair-trade products… She keeps the rest of the sheets at home and wouldn’t part with them for any price. Earlier this year the couple got back from their seventh trip to Southeast Asia. They eschew hotels for eco-lodges and village life usually hiring a guide to help them converse more easily with crafters and locals. “You stay in those villages and eat what they eat” says Robert a safety manager for Whatcom Transportation Authority. It gives me a real appreciation for what I have here and an appreciation for other cultures and what they have too. “Though she loves her hot showers and clean water Shelley happily gives them up to avoid a hotel experience she could just as easily have at home.
