Picture by Eastern Projections March 7: The sheen of muga stole the show at a buyer-seller interaction held at the Viswaratna Hotel today. The traditional handicrafts of Assam struck a chord among foreign buyers who showed a keen interest in buying the products. The Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam organised the interaction under the aegis of the office of the development commissioner (handicraft) ministry of textiles. The interaction was part of the 15th Guwahati International Trade Fair under way at the Assam Engineering College ground. ver 80 foreign buyers across eight countries including Turkey United Arab Emirates Czech Republic Sri Lanka and Thailand took part in the interaction today… “We have launched a six-month integrated design project for the craftsmen so that they are aware of the new trends in fashion and make their products accordingly” Dkhar said. He added that there was a need to emphasise the latest technology design development and diversification in order to compete in quality design and cost. Echoing Dkhar Sunisa Samitiasiri a buyer from Thailand said though handicraft products especially the muga ones are very attractive the price was on the higher side. Mevit Yenlic of Turkey said apart from the muga products the handicrafts from Nagaland also have the potential to capture the international market. “We are planning to place some orders for these products and sell them in our country” he said. Yenlic said participating in trade fairs and interaction with buyers from different countries give an opportunity to know what products were in demand.

The World Travel Trends Report says Asia-Pacific continues to lead expansion of the world’s tourism trade with international arrivals in the region increasing by over 10% in 2007 following an 8% growth in 2006. utbound tourism is also buoyant according to Asian Travel Monitor with China South Korea Taiwan Singapore India Malaysia and Thailand scoring over 70 million outbound trips combined with a total annual spending of over $147 billion. The MasterCard Worldwide Index of Travel confirms that Asian-Pacific outbound traffic will continue soaring with an estimated 79. 5 million outbound tourists in the next six months. More than 25% of the region’s outbound tourists will be from the Chinese mainland according to MasterCard which estimates a 12. 4% year-on-year increase to 21… India’s growing economy and increased affluence are also encouraging domestic tourism which is growing 25% annually. Combined with the growing number of overseas visitors that is adding to the strain on the country’s infrastructure. Industry sources for example estimate that India has a shortage of 100000 hotel rooms. Neither did the federal budget grant the demand for the hospitality industry to be given infrastructure status that would enable easier flow of investments. Even so Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram disappointed tourism-related businesses when his February 29 budget largely ignored the industry while offering exporters government sops to offset the impact on them of the strengthening rupee.
