To the Editor: I wish to alert travelers to Thailand about a recent credit card scam in which I was a victim. In late May I went to Chiang Mai for the purpose of trekking in northern Thailand. While on the four-day trek I left my valuables (passport traveler’s checks credit cards) in the safe of the Diov Guest House my hotel. While I was away on the trek someone with access to the safe took my MasterCard and Visa card went to Bangkok charged $6500 in purchases returned to the hotel and replaced the cards in my wallet. A few days later I attempted to use the cards both of which were rejected. I thought it might be a computer error. Upon my return to the states a few weeks ago it became clear what had happened.

Suicide bombers could appear in Thailand politician says
Earthtimes.org – Mar 22, 2008
The MP told the Nation newspaper that he was alarmed by comments on a website sympathetic to the separatists that claimed up to 40 suicide bombers had been prepared for attacks. The Thai army has recently claimed a number of successes in tracking down suspects and cracking terrorist cells although the drum beat of killing and explosions continues. The terrorists exploded two car bombs in recent days one against a prominent local hotel favoured by the military which Thai intelligence officials said was a new tactic. Critics of the new Thai government widely believed to be backed by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra have complained that it has no fresh ideas to solve the bitter conflict. May observers blame Thaksin for throwing fuel on local grievances by encouraging the security forces to use muscle rather than subtlety in trying to pacify the region. The three provinces of Yala Pattani and Narattiwat bordering Malaysia constituted an independent Islamic sultanate known as Pattani for hundreds of years before being conquered by Bangkok in 1786. The border provinces came under the direct rule of the Thai bureaucracy in 1902.

Gate tells Detective there are three or four young chefs in the capital Noumea from two and three Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris and Burgundy. "For them it’s an adventure to work in Noumea" he says. Didier Broux is one; he’s in the kitchens at Le 360 (with a view over all Noumea) at the Ramada Hotel. His food is modern Gate says which means not provincial using his own ideas and local seasonal ingredients (chefs here make mousses with sweet potatoes tropical fruits such as custard apples and mangoes are abundant and the Loyalty Islands grow fresh vanilla beans). Another Noumea eatery to remember is Le Roof with a thatch roof and perched on stilts directly over the water; views are great and dolphins and turtles pass by. ramadaplaza-noumea… Bon Appetit a 20-page gourmet guide is in preparation (available from travel agents and local hotels in April). * * *FREIGN feasting is also on the agenda for Maeve ‘Meara and her Gorgeous Safaris co-adventurers (an arm of ‘Meara’s Gourmet Safaris) visiting Bali (May 18-23) or Thailand (June 8-15). ‘Meara has the best insider info on Balinese restaurant eating — smoked duck fish with herbs steamed in banana leaves fern salad — from Asri Kerthyasa wife of a Balinese prince; Kerthyasa will also uncover food finds for the group at the Ubud markets.
