China’s ‘Hawaii’ goes upmarket to lure tourists
stuff.co.nz – May 24, 2008
Hainan once a lonely place of exile that today styles itself on Hawaii aims to become a luxury destination to rival Bali and Phuket with several high-end resorts opening up for business. April alone saw the Ritz-Carlton and Singapore-listed Banyan Tree opening resorts. The Mandarin riental follows in late 2008 with its own chic hotel. It marks a huge change for Hainan which until recently was known in China as a place for cheap-and-cheerful package tours and little known abroad except in Russia South Korea and Japan. "Sanya is one of the real new tropical destinations in Asia and in China in particular it is the only tropical island" said the Banyan Tree Sanya's general manager Peter Pedersen. "It's becoming more and more in demand for both the local market and the international tourist market. It makes a perfect spot" he told Reuters standing on top of one of the resort's pool villas which go for some 5000 yuan a night… "Tourists say they love the scenery the sea the weather and the beaches. Some add though that Sanya is a little boring. "There's no character here compared to going to Thailand" said American tourist Koca Wen. "There's a huge lack of energy. "Still the potentially huge Chinese market is a major draw for the resorts which hope to leverage on the millions of people who have benefited from the country's economic boom and are increasingly adopting Western lifestyles and aspirations. "Some of the estimates I've seen suggest 450 million middle class Chinese in 10 years from now" said the Banyan Tree's Pedersen. "I think Sanya has a huge potential.

Building hope one house at a time
Toronto Star – May 24, 2008
He has talked to countless supporters. His appearance technically ended half an hour ago but Fuller remains in the largely vacated ntario Room at the Fairmont Royal York hotel. He’s listening to a soft-spoken woman in her 30s named Jacinta. A few words caught here and there seem to indicate that she’s telling him her private hopes and dreams. To her ? and many others who approach him for hugs or to give thanks ? Fuller is something of a spiritual mentor. Fuller nods then he bows his head toward Jacinta’s… Linda and Millard reunited eventually founding a housing charity at Koinonia Farm (from the Greek word meaning "fellowship") ? a Christian agricultural community in Americus Ga. As one of the only integrated communities in the Deep South the farm was constantly attacked by Ku Klux Klan members. After building a first home for a needy family in 1969 Fuller founded Habitat in 1976 going on to build homes in countries from Thailand to Nigeria to the Dominican Republic. In 1996 he became the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Then in a move that shocked supporters the Fullers were fired by Habitat’s board of directors in 2005 amid allegations that he had engaged in inappropriate conduct with a female employee allegedly touching her arm and neck during a car ride. Fuller was never formally accused of a crime and has denounced the allegations as "false. " He has blamed the incident on a deeper rift with board members over the place of religion in the company.
