The foreign ministry issued a statement marking the anniversary of the detonations on May 28 1998 which were carried out in response to nuclear tests by regional rival India and caused worldwide alarm. “It was a historic day in the nation’s quest for security” the statement said of the tests. “Pakistan has taken its responsibilities as a nuclear weapon state seriously. We have not relented in our pursuit for creating a peaceful global and regional environment” it added… ne soldier was killed and two injured in a blast in Pattani province late Tuesday police said. A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the attack but he fought with the soldiers driving him to a military camp causing a car crash which killed a sergeant major and a private. The suspect was also injured authorities said. Later Wednesday in Yala militants ambushed a wedding convoy but some of the villagers were armed and fought the attackers killing one rebel police said.

The Bangkok-based rights group Human Rights and Development Foundation (HRDF) released a statement saying three Shan migrants presented a petition to the Supreme Administration Court in Bangkok on Wednesday in the case involving migrant workers’ eligibility for compensation. f the three workers named in the petition the most seriously injured was Nang Noom Mai Seng who was paralyzed from the waist down following an accident at the construction site for the Shangri-la Hotel in Chiang Mai on December 4 2006. Her employers paid Nang Noom a lump sum compensation claim in November 2007. In January of this year the Workmen's Compensation Fund (WCF) Appeals Committee rejected Nang Noom's appeal of the SS decision to deny her compensation following the accident. The case was first submitted to the Chiang Mai Administrative Court on April 11 2008. n April 25 the Court issued notice of its refusal to consider the case ruling that the legality of the SS’s existing policy falls within the jurisdiction of the Labour Court because it is a dispute related to labor protection laws… Few Burmese migrant workers have passports. Regulations say that every employer must pay into the WCF which can pay compensation to a worker in case of an accident in the workplace but the policy excludes non-passport workers. Somchai Homla-or the secretary-general of HRDF said in the press released “This appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court by Nang Noom and her two colleagues is an appeal on behalf of the approximately 2 million mostly Burmese migrant workers currently in Thailand who work in dirty and dangerous workplaces.
