Dubai’s man-made masterpieces add their own beauty to this desert…
San Diego Union Tribune – May 4, 2008
My charmed status undoubtedly had something to do with arranging an airport transfer through the hotel often described as the top business hotel in the Middle East. A mere 40 minutes after my arrival I was comfortably settled in my 25th-floor room staring in wonder at the nearby crane-topped Burj Dubai the soon-to-be world's tallest building. Was I really in Dubai? Not only one of the world's fastest-growing places but one of its hottest (in more ways than one) tourist destinations? ne look at all the men in the hotel lobby wearing the kaffiyeh the traditional Arab headdress dispelled any doubt. fficials won’t divulge its final height fearing it will be surpassed. My recent stay in Dubai – the last leg of an around-the-world journey – was full of surprises not the least of which being that you can hate shopping (the only reason to visit Dubai in the minds of many) and still love the place… My airport taxi driver was from India my desert guide from Kenya. ne waitress was from Indonesia two others from Japan. Waiters hailed from Morocco Sri Lanka India Thailand and elsewhere. No matter where you turn business deals are being made in the World's Ultimate Boomtown. Four men had no sooner settled into a table adjacent to mine at the Exchange Grill restaurant than one exclaimed “Shall we begin negotiating in 25 minutes?” Begin any time you want I thought as long as it doesn't interfere with my sirloin steak! But it's not all million-dollar deals and chauffeured Mercedes here; amid the slim sleek skyscrapers is the “old” Dubai the Dubai of winding alleys; souks and mosques and the ancient-looking but reliable water taxis known as abras. I love to walk a city but Dubai will frustrate even the hardiest hiker. Its attractions apart from those on either side of Dubai Creek are all over the map and there's no mass transit system.
Danang becomes central attraction
VietNamNet Bridge – May 4, 2008
But tourism is not the only draw. Danang is Vietnam?s fourth largest city and the largest city in central region. It is the gateway of the 1450 kilometre East-West Corridor linking Vietnam Laos and Thailand and has an international airport. Local authorities are getting more active in recent years aiming to build a modern city. Infrastructure projects like roads bridges and ports continue to improve while construction on an international airport terminal has recently begun and is expected to complete in the next three years. Peter Ryder chief executive officer of Indochina Land said Danang officials were investor-friendly and their supportive attitude and policies would not only draw in real estate developers but also manufacturers. With a population of nearly one million people an economy growing at 14-15 per cent annually and a lack of quality properties demand for housing accommodation offices shops and hotels is picking up… Koreans are one of the most active developers in Danang. Daewon recently broke ground for construction of Da Phuoc City and Golf Course. The $250 million project will have 8500 apartments a five-star hotel offices and an 18-hole golf course built on 280ha encroaching onto the sea. This is Daewon?s second project in the central city after a $30 million development it is building near Tuyen Son bridge. The city?s ambitious plan to develop infrastructure on the two banks of Han River is facilitating real estate development on the eastern bank. In addition to Thuan Phuoc bridge under construction the authorities are working on plan to build two more bridges including the $62. 8 million Tran Thi Ly and $35 million Dragon.
