Travels with my children

My wife Bel and I discreetly exchange glances. We’ve heard stories about how merrily marshmallow-brained people in Southeast Asia can go over children; if this proves to be true we have it made. Things continue on a roll outside when a taxi driver all but melts as he helps them into his jaunty purple cab and once we’ve negotiated the extensive piece of installation art Bangkokers refer to as traffic the staff at our hotel go into a fit of mass swooning. The robustly named Bangkok Pullman King Power — our swanky digs for the night before we head across the border into Laos — is palatial and has everything up to and including a swimming pool with a see-through wall that allows one to peer into the garden and koi pond a storey below but as far Daisy and Leo are concerned it’s business as usual: wild adoration from grown-ups they’ve only just met. "Do you think it’s because of my princess crown?" Daisy whispers. ver the next day as we meander northeast by train ute minivan tuk-tuk and a truck so stuffed with women and their offspring it looks like a world record attempt we discover that the elaborate rituals of child worship in Laos aren’t a whole lot different from those in Thailand. Leo who’s especially fair and with legs still too short to allow a rapid escape is a particular hit… The robustly named Bangkok Pullman King Power — our swanky digs for the night before we head across the border into Laos — is palatial and has everything up to and including a swimming pool with a see-through wall that allows one to peer into the garden and koi pond a storey below but as far Daisy and Leo are concerned it’s business as usual: wild adoration from grown-ups they’ve only just met. Leo who’s especially fair and with legs still too short to allow a rapid escape is a particular hit. Before we left home some people seemed to regard the idea of traipsing through a corner of Asia with small children as brave and foolhardy. But as we travel towards the riverside town of Champasak in southern Laos we find that apart from the usual pleasures of travelling with one’s little ones — the wide eyes the wild joy the wonderful questions the hysterical observations the glee of all being in one room together in a string of cheap and cheerful guesthouses — they’re the ultimate icebreakers. We don’t just feel like anonymous travellers; the Laos catch sight of Daisy and Leo and they go from quiet smiles to full force friendliness.
Home truths

“If the Jersey team have a detailed picture of what they’ve been told from many sources and the excavations at the home corroborate the visual descriptions then the suspects should be worried very worried. Victims’ accounts describe how children at the home went missing how staff would describe those who disappeared as simply “runaways”. Harper’s team have contacted some of the runaways children who escaped the home left the island and made new lives for themselves in places as far away as Australia and Thailand. But what records there are can’t account for all the claimed runaways. Jersey’s shocked population hope all the answers lie away from the island but many seem worried that more nightmares are still to come. Rumours of buried bodies says Harper “can’t be ignored”. Rumours of buried bodies says Harper “can’t be ignored”. At the Moorings Hotel in Gorey harbour just a few minutes’ walk down the hill from Haut de la Garenne the scene looks like postcard perfection. With the mediaeval fortification of Mont rgueil behind small boats and yachts bobbing in the harbour and the Royal Jersey Golf Club just down the road conversation in the hotel bar should be about the simple relaxed life of the Bailiwick of Jersey a sort of offshore Bournemouth. Instead John says the island doesn’t like this much attention. “They the newspapers say we knew but said nothing kept quiet. ” He points towards the coast and the golf club.
