Wheels n Film: Torque
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 18, 2008
Incidentally all of these bikes seem to uncannily grow longer forks and reinforced shocks when filmed in off-road settings. The bad guys ride a variety of choppers. The plot: utlaw biker Cary Ford returns to California after hiding out for a spell in Thailand. He initially went on the run to avoid involving his girlfriend Shane (yes we know!) in an incredibly complicated fracas involving drugs evil bikers and the FBI. His return seems to lend proof to the old saying; “why put off until tomorrow what you can accomplish today. ” Suffice to say that with friends like Ford who needs weapons of mass destruction? In a nutshell: Torque is by far and away and without any shadow of doubt one of the silliest films ever made in the history of modern cinema. If you’re still reading at this point you’re probably caught in the same aesthetic quandary we are; is this film deserving of nothing more than unbridled contempt or a certain amount of grudging admiration? It’s easy to rip this film to pieces… ” Suffice to say that with friends like Ford who needs weapons of mass destruction? In a nutshell: Torque is by far and away and without any shadow of doubt one of the silliest films ever made in the history of modern cinema. If you’re still reading at this point you’re probably caught in the same aesthetic quandary we are; is this film deserving of nothing more than unbridled contempt or a certain amount of grudging admiration? It’s easy to rip this film to pieces. The first five minutes are a deliberate play on the Fast & the Furious complete with some of the most obviously choreographed fighting ever (”I’ll pretend to punch you and you fall over and that guy grabs my arm…”) and TV fans will note Max Beesley (ie. that bloke off of Hotel Babylon) in a badly cast role as a biker gang heavy. n the other hand this movie has the good sense not to take itself too seriously; it knows that it’s a knock-off and revels in its own ridiculousness. Torque moves at almost breakneck pace and things like character-development plot complexities and even acting are dumped off the back of this speeding bullet of a movie which seems to exist only to hang pop culture references and superbike chases on. Are the chase scenes worth watching? It depends how much of a purist you are.
