The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) in collaboration with the All Pakistan Commercial Exporter Association (APCEA) of Rough and Unpolished precious and semi precious stones has organised the three-day show at a local hotel. Up to 30 Pakistani gemstone companies set up stalls displaying some of the best rare and valuable varieties of gemstones at their stalls. The precious and semi-precious stones at the show included emerald ruby tourmaline lapis lazuli kunzite granite jade fluorite topaz aquamarine and peridot. APCEA Chairman Faqir Hussain told Daily Times that the NWFP had a wide range of gemstone deposits constituting one of the best and rare varieties in the world. “These rare and fine gemstones have attracted buyers in the international market” he said… “These rare and fine gemstones have attracted buyers in the international market” he said. Mr Hussain said that delegates from the US Italy Austria Dubai India Brazil France Germany Thailand and other countries attended the show. He said Pakistan was lucky to have a large variety of expensive gemstones and that the country is near some of the international gem markets such as the UAE Thailand Sri Lanka Hong Kong and India. “ur exports have increased over the past few years and we will continue our efforts to increase them further” he said. To promote the export of cut and polished gemstones he said the Gem and Gemological Institute of Pakistan (GGIP) has been set up in Peshawar to train labour. Mr Hussain said the exhibition would bolster the export of precious and semi-precious stones. “ur aim is to promote the country’s precious and semi-precious stones in international gems markets and I think we have achieved the objective” said Ziaul Haq Sarhadi the Sarhad Chamber of Commere and Industry executive member (SCCI).
