Man can’t get travel refund for thwarted trip

Here he had to spend additional money on hotels he had not anticipated. After three days he realized his Japanese visa would expire and he was forced to return to New York. He received a $646 refund for his unused Thailand hotel and an explanation that his airfare could not be returned because he did take a flight albeit not to where he wanted to go. He and friends have been trying to convince Liberty staff that his is an extraordinary circumstance and they should honor their “travel protection” plan. “I am just trying to get him back what he deserves” said Tracey Skane of Woodbury Conn. Her husband Michael was a maintenance mechanic at Friendly’s and the two families became friends. She said she saw an earlier story about Aslam’s aborted plans in The Journal News and got involved when she realized that added to the disappointment her friend wasn’t getting the refund she felt was rightfully his.

In BangkokHIS critics complain he got the premiership through the back door. But last Wednesday in my capacity as President of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand I saw him make a real backdoor entrance of a different kind. I had to welcome newly-installed Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for dinner with some 500 guests – including most of Bangkok’s foreign media and many from the diplomatic business and NG communities. Around 30 protestors had gathered at the front steps of the Intercontinental Hotel where the event was being held. They were polite but were armed with eggs which they intended to throw at the Prime Minister. I was told to stand by because the Prime Minister’s security would change his entry route at the last second.

Enduring seven consecutive days of retail therapy was simply not on. So Dave Jinx and I slipped away to Palm Tree Lagoon a four acre lake north of our hotel in Hua Hin following a Boxing Day excursion to that popular tourist spot near Bangkok non other than The Bridge over the River Kwai. It seemed strange really surreal almost that for more years than I care to remember watching the motion picture of the same name always occurred around Christmas time and yet this year here we were at the railway bridge itself reflecting upon how many lives its original wooden construction cost. Today’s bridge being of steel and concrete construction. A poignant moment indeed.

Protesters took over the two airports in Bangkok on November 25. The Foss family had no indication of what was going on because they had been in Chiang Mai in North Thailand for a week traveling to Ayutthaya to take in the ruins of the ancient capitol and then went on a two hour cruise on the Chao Praya river into Bangkok. They heard the news when they arrived back at their hotel. “ur immediate reaction to the protesters was concern and fear that it could turn violent and our safety would be compromised” Kim stated. “But we were fortunate to have a friend  from Minneapolis who is opening a donut factory in Bangkok. He talked to us about how the Thai government operates and the unlikelihood of violence.   Even though it affected our plans it did put our minds at ease.
