Pacific Standard Time on January 24 General Manager Stephen Darling officially opened Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver. It is the first hotel in North America for the Asian-based luxury hotel group Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and its 60th hotel worldwide. In attendance were the 190 men and women who will bring Shangri-La’s renowned Asian hospitality to life in North America. Among them the Shangri-La “Tigers” a group of young hoteliers placed in positions at the group’s properties throughout Asia on training programs ranging from two months to two-and-a-half years who are now leading the hotel’s staff in delivering Shangri-La’s distinctive style of service. Throughout their stay guests will experience the touches and technology that define this “next generation” hotel. A calming sensory experience using light and sound will welcome guests; candlelight flickers along a back wall and natural light streams into a small bamboo garden while wind chimes crickets and rustling grass provide soft background sounds.

Glenn de Souza vice president for international operations Asia said yesterday that the global financial crisis had changed tourists' behaviour and they were now increasingly looking for reasonable value-for-money prices. Therefore many tourists will choose three-star hotels instead of four- or five-star properties in order to save on tourism costs. He said Best Western would introduce its three-star hotels next year in three countries – Japan South Korea and Indonesia. For Thailand the company will open the new brand after it introduces the Best Western Premier – its premium brand aimed at tapping high-income tourists – in Phuket Hua Hin and Pattaya this year. "We will position our hotels' brands clearly in order to match with tourists' requirements. ur three-star hotels' service standard will be similar to four- and five-star hotels but with prices 25 per cent lower than our premium brands. We expect to penetrate medium and high-level tourists.
