Singapore is an enticing city and a great place to attend a conference. Not so for a weekend to recover after an intense three days preceded by an 11-hour flight from New Zealand. So here I am on the magic isle of Phuket one of my all-time favourite holiday spots ensconced in The Yorkshire Hotel in Patong after a 90-minute flight from Changi costing NZ$120 return. Yorkshire in Patong? Just another of the hundreds of contradictions that exist in the “Land of Smiles”. This wee piece of Yorkshire is in Soi Sansabai right in the centre of town two minutes from the beach at the top of Bangla Rd and just around the corner from the huge and recently opened JungCeylon Shopping Centre. Restaurants cafes bars and massages are right outside the door. Its relatively nondescript but neat frontage very much in keeping with its small-scale neighbours belies what lies behind.
