“I made the right choice to apply for a hotel training course a few years back when I was still in high school” recalled Ms Chutikarn who has been working as a waitress at a Japanese restaurant at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Bangkok since 2005. She was in her last year in high school when she chose to attend the Youth Career Development Programme initiated by Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts in collaboration with Unicef Thailand. The programme now in its 15th year of operation aims to support hotel-related skills training for high-school graduates especially females in northern and northeastern Thailand. Trainees are equipped with skills that heighten their potential for pursuing hotel careers. Many students at Ms Chutikarn’s school are from poor families and have limited career or education choices after graduation. “My friends and I were all concerned about getting a job – not to mention working in a hotel which was beyond reach for many of us” she said. “I wouldn’t have thought I could make it to where I am now with such limited means and skills before joining the programme.
