“While these are challenging times fundamentally the global economy will rebound. Today’s reduced travel budgets and cancelled vacations are tomorrow’s pent-up demand! When the turnaround happens Le Meridien will be in a position once again to leverage our great brand our unique properties and our truly global organisation to make the most of this opportunity. ” What steps do you think are needed to keep Thailand’s hotel industry afloat in these very trying times? When people buy a holiday or organise a business event they at the very least want a certain level of comfort. Peace and stability would [give them] confidence in this country and in turn woo back foreign investment. At times like this I feel it’s always best to focus on what you can do and what you can influence and not worry about external factors beyond your control. Thailand would do well to focus its efforts on people who know the country well and who know that as with everything else this [the political unrest] too will pass. What’s your opinion about five-star hotels using price-dumping as a tool to survive the current slump? Today’s travellers are more savvy than those many years ago.

Will Abhisit Vejjajiva’s government be able to host the July Asean Ministerial meeting? SEVERAL hours after East Asian leaders left Pattaya last month when their summit got scuttled by anti-government protesters Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva made a surprise appearance at the media centre where hundreds of journalists were stationed. The media centre was the scene of an ugly incident earlier in the day when red-shirt demonstrators forced their way into what was supposed to be a secured area. The protesters nearly made it into the hotel down the road where the leaders were supposed to have their meeting. A tired and harassed-looking Abhisit held a short press conference that evening to apologise to the leaders. In fact he had personally said sorry to the leaders at the U-tapao airport as they departed for home. He refused to take questions. It had been a long day for the embattled leader.

Gregory Anderson is the general manager of the upmarket Le Meridien Angkor hotel in Siem Reap. He has noticed there are fewer Japanese tourists in town and says occupancy rates are down 20 percent for Siem Reap’s upmarket hotels. He blames the global economic situation as well as political volatility in Thailand and an ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand. So in the face of lower spending on travel and tourism in the current global downturn what can Cambodia do to boost visitor numbers? Tourism Minister Dr Thong Khon says he is targeting countries that are less affected by the global slump. And he is optimistic that 2009 could yet prove better than last year. But he says Cambodia is not helped by problems in Thailand. KHN: Because you know Thailand is a main gate to Cambodia.
