Celebrity travel: Sue Lawley goes off the rails on a train ride …

It seemed torepresent some of the worst aspects of the expat lifestyle – alternative dropouts at one end rapacious hedonists at the otherseeking either the new Nirvana or the grisly fleshpots of Bangkok. But at the Dhara Dhevi Hotel in Chiang Mai all my preconceptions were effortlessly blown away. The hotel – a resort really – is an extraordinary place. It’s the vision of a car salesman from Southern Thailand who’s poured $50 million into the project: the creation of an ancient Siamese city complete with high walls and a moat surrounding a village and a vast palace. To enter the palace (reception) with its teak-roofed pagodas spiralling filigree chimneys and vast lounges open on all sides to soft breezes is to enter another world where life proceeds at a serene pace. A spa a fitness centre a reconstructed village with local women plying their traditional crafts two swimming pools a shopping street and to cap it all a working rice field are just some of the facilities and activities concealed within Dhara Devi or ‘Star Goddess’. The city of Chiang Mai once stood at the heart of the Lanna kingdom.
